Women in Jazz Concert Series
October 14-16, 1994
Antone's Nite Club, 2915 Guadalupe
Expanded from two to three days, this dynamic concert
series was held October 14-16, 1994 for packed houses at Antone's Nite
Club, 2915 Guadalupe. An exciting, talented lineup was featured each
evening.
Friday featured Pamela Hart, Beth Ullman, Willie Nicholson,
and Mady Kaye, with a debut performance by Nancy Webb. These fine vocalists
were accompanied by the Sandy Allen Trio and Tony Campise.
Saturday featured Julie Burrell, Donna Menthol, Hope Morgan,
Pamela Hart, and a debut from Chandra Washington, all accompanied by
the James Polk Trio and Bob Meyer.
Sunday brought a variety of styles from Karan Chavis,
Judy Arnold, LaDonna Jones, Glenda Dotson, and LaMonica Lewis. These
ladies were joined by Kyle Turner and Standing Room Only.
Here
is some of the program information from that concert series: Women in
Jazz is Austin's only vocal showcase. An annual concert showcase for
both professinal and amateur female vocalists in Austin, its diverse
roster of quality talent provides Austin audiences with an opportunity
they rarely have: to hear quality vocal jazz and pop in a market where
such performances are notoriously scarce. In addition to providing quality
entertainment and a venue for these artists, Women in Jazz promotes
jazz appreciation to Austinites unfamiliar with this musical tradition,
and provides the featured artists with the visibility they need to pursue
professional opportunities in the recording industry.
The
Women in Jazz concert is made possible in part by the Texas
Commission on the Arts and Women And Their Work. HartBeat Productions
has joined the DiverseArts Production Group, Inc. consortium for the
production of Women in Jazz. DiverseArts
Production Group, Inc. is an innovative new cultural cooperative
bringing together experienced production professionals, administrators,
artists, and scholars who collaborate on multidisciplinary projects
that showcase artistic excellence, provide cultural education, promote
economic development, and celebrate ethnic heritage and diversity for
the arts in Austin, Texas. These objectives, along with HartBeat's desire
to provide a promotional opportunity for professional and amateur vocalists
are consistent with HartBeat Production's initiatives. Women in Jazz
is the premier performance of the DiverseArts season of events. This
year, the production group is operating under the umbrella of Women
and Their Work.
